How to make the best out of your Coliving experience

Updated: Dec 2, 2022

The term Coliving has been buzzing around for a while now. And you will probably get as many definitions as there are types of coliving: the big operators, the long stay, the boutique and the rural spaces, the ones that cater to digital nomads and everything else in between. We have started our own spaces and lived in several ones so we like to think we have a pretty good understanding of what works and what doesn't, what matters and what is just for show. But of course coliving is mostly about living and everyone has their own take on that. Feel free to let us know what your experience has been and what you think!

Based on our personal and professional experience our key take aways for a smooth and full of growth coliving experience are:

Treat the space like your Home

And by that we mean, treat it well. Care for the space as if it were yours: Clean up after yourself, if you see something that needs fixing, give it a shot and/or ask for help figuring it out. And of course, enjoy it!

Be aware of your boundaries and communicate them

We are all different. Even if we all love coliving, we might have different understanding or experience of it. It is very important to be self aware and know what is non negotiable for us to feel safe and comfortable. For example, it's completely ok not to want to socialize every night or to need some alone time every now and then. It's about finding the balance that works for you and communicate it to the group so everyone can live together in harmony.

Be pro-active

It is SO important to remember coliving is not a hotel or an all inclusive resort. Yes there is a cleaner, yes there is a Community Manager but the true coliving magic happens beyond these roles, when everyone feels both safe and inspired, that is when the co-creation happens. This is your opportunity (and your safe space) to share your skills, host that workshop you always dreamt of doing, talk about your passion, cook that dish for everyone and get feedback... Never hesitate to propose events, activities and get together and remember, the more you give, the more you get in return!

Stay longer

Of course you do not always have total freedom on your schedule but if you are able, try and give a coliving space a real chance when it comes to length of stay. That is why we have a minimum stay of a week at both our locations Swiss & Greek Escape. If you ask us, we'd definitely recommend to stay at least one month. We believe it takes time to get acquainted with a new space, a new routine and new people!

Try new things

Unless your boundaries are getting crossed, dare to say yes to things other people are proposing. Coliving is a wonderful opportunity to learn new tricks, to explore unknown territories and get out of your comfort zone!

Communicate communicate communicate

It's not always all rainbows and butterfly. But staying silent and frustrated never solved anything. If something is bothering you, say it. Remember to speak kindly and from the heart. Keep in mind that common sense is not universal. What is obvious for us might be completely foreign to someone else, what you are experiencing might be different for someone else. As difficult as it may be, prefer face to face communication to online and if nothing seems to fix it, talk to our Community Manager about it.

Have we missed something? We would love to hear about what you've learnt during your coliving experience!
