From Chania to Plakias: our story on opening a new coliving location

As some of you may know, we have been operating Greek Escape in Chania since 2020. However, last winter we encountered a dead end with our local partners in Chania, which made us decide to explore other options.

Our primary goal has always been to offer beautiful accommodations in stunning locations, where people can live and work alongside a community of digital nomads.

With our mission in mind, we embarked on a search for the next Greek Escape houses. It took us several months and numerous visits to various properties until we finally found the perfect fit.

Introducing Villa Hestia and Villa Calliope in Plakias

When considering the opening of a coliving space anywhere, it becomes a bit of a chicken and egg problem. If you focus only on the house, you may find the destination lacking in interest. On the other hand, if you choose a fantastic destination but a dysfunctional house, your guests will be unhappy. For it to succeed, both elements need to work harmoniously.

When exploring options for Greek Escape, we took both elements into consideration.

The location: Plakias

We selected Plakias for its breathtaking landscapes. Our aim was to find a peaceful place that is close to hiking trails (right at your doorstep), a short walking distance to the beach (only 5 minutes away), and relatively near a vibrant city (a 35-minute drive to Rethymno - a lively student city with a vibrant nightlife, especially during the winter season). Plakias met all our requirements and surpassed our expectations.

Throughout the previous winter season, we extensively explored Plakias. We were there in January, conducted a test weekend in February, and spent the entire month of March experiencing everything firsthand. Our goal was to ensure that there were ample activities available during the winter season. We are delighted to announce that it passed the test with flying colors!

What makes Plakias so special?

Well, a video is worth a thousand words. So, check it out here.

In case you don't have Instagram, let us tell you about our top 3:

  1. Breathtaking Hikes & Views: Wake up to the sweet melodies of chirping birds, take leisurely strolls to the beach during your breaks, and explore the magnificent gorge on your way to Plakias. With an abundance of hiking options suitable for hikers of all levels, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

  2. Embracing Nature: Nestled along the coastline, Plakias provides stunning views of the surrounding bay and the majestic Libyan Sea. Our houses are filled with natural light, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. And wait until you witness the captivating sunsets from our swimming pool!

  3. Convenience: With the beach just a short walk away from our location, as well as supermarkets, restaurants, and essential shops nearby, convenience is right at your fingertips. Moreover, the bustling city of Rethymno is within easy reach, offering a vibrant winter atmosphere for those seeking to spice up their Friday nights or immerse themselves in Greek city life!

The coliving houses: Villa Hestia and Villa Calliope

We visited so many houses that we lost count. But there were two criteria that always mattered most:

1. Beautiful villas with a view.

2. Functionality that allows our guests to be productive

Our checklist of non-negotiable features included:

✓ Both houses provide breathtaking views.

✓ Natural light is an absolute necessity, not just an added bonus.

✓ Heating and AC are essential.

✓ Starlink.

✓ 5G router (100 Mbps download).

✓ Appliances such as a dishwasher, oven, and microwave at minimum.

✓ Walking distance to supermarkets and essential shops.

Both villas successfully met our non-negotiable criteria. Additionally, they are conveniently located next to each other, which means our guests can access both.

Villa Hestia, the larger of the two, is the hub for social activities. It features a spacious living room that opens up to a terrace and infinity pool. The outdoor space includes a second dining area with a wooden table and chairs for 12 people, a cozy reading corner with a view, a patio with sun loungers facing the swimming pool, and a balcony area.

Villa Calliope's living room has been transformed into a shared workspace, complete with office chairs, long tables, Starlink WiFi, and a kitchen for preparing lunches.

Now, the only thing missing is YOU! We can't wait to welcome you, starting November 16, 2023.
