Winter in Crete is one of the island’s best-kept secrets. While most people picture Greece in summer, the winter months offer something completely different: calm beaches, warm days, authentic local life, and the perfect rhythm for deep work and slow living.
With daytime temperatures often between 15–20°C and plenty of sunshine, Crete is one of the warmest places in Europe in winter — making it an ideal base for digital nomads, remote workers, and anyone looking for a peaceful reset.

And if you stay at Greek Escape, you’ll be based in Gerani, a small coastal village just 10 minutes from Rethymno. It’s quiet, authentic, and perfectly located to explore both the west and central parts of the island.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of our favorite activities to do in Gerani and around Crete in winter... so far. All tested and approved by Fanny and Haz, our founders ;)
1. Explore the Rethymno Old Town (10 minutes away)
Rethymno is one of the prettiest towns in Crete, and winter makes it even better. No crowds, no heat — just peaceful streets and the chance to enjoy the city like a local.
What to do:
Get lost in the Venetian Old Town
Visit the Fortezza with panoramic sea views
Enjoy cosy cafés and bakeries
Take seaside walks along the marina
Discover small boutiques and local designers
It’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon after work or enjoy a slow weekend morning.

2. Explore the Coastal Village of Gerani
Gerani is your home base — and it has everything you need within walking distance.
You’ll find:
A small selection of year-round restaurants (Staras Comfort food is a personal favorite!)
Cafés and bakeries
Quiet coastal paths
A relaxed local atmosphere
It’s the kind of place where you quickly settle into a routine: morning walks, focused coworking, and dinners with new friends.

3. Hike the Kourtaliotiko Gorge & Discover Preveli Beach
One of Crete’s most dramatic landscapes sits just 30-35 minutes from Greek Escape.
Start at the small church of Agios Antonios, hidden deep between the cliffs. From there, follow the river through the gorge — a refreshing winter hike with stunning scenery. If the weather is warm, continue all the way to Preveli Beach, famous for its palm forest and lagoon.
Winter is the best season to enjoy this hike: no crowds, cooler temperatures, and beautiful light.

4. Enjoy Winter Beaches Without the Crowds
You might not be swimming every day, but winter beaches in Crete are magical — peaceful, sunny, and quiet.
Close to Gerani, you have:
Kamari Beach Peaceful and easily accessible, perfect for a quick walk or a relaxing moment by the sea.
Episkopi Beach A long and beautiful sandy beach, ideal for long strolls, sunbathing, or spending a quiet afternoon.
Petres Beach A smaller, scenic spot with crystal-clear water and a calm atmosphere.
All of them are perfect for walking, reading, or simply enjoying the sound of the waves.

5. Go on Weekend Adventures Around Crete
Crete is bigger than people think — perfect for weekend trips.
Chania (1h): Walk the Venetian harbour, lighthouse, and old town. Great food, great cafés, amazing for a day trip.
Heraklion (1h15): Visit the Palace of Knossos, wander the city center, and enjoy year-round cultural events.
Argyroupoli: A mountain village famous for its waterfalls and stone tavernas.
Plakias (40 min): A laid-back coastal village with a warm microclimate, beautiful beaches, and a relaxed winter atmosphere — perfect for a sunny day trip.

6. Taste Crete’s Food Culture
Winter is when Cretans cook at home, gather, and enjoy hearty, traditional dishes.
Try:
Dakos
Local olive oil tastings
Fresh seafood
Local wine
Raki (you’ll be offered some… many times 😅)
The best restaurants stay open all year (especially on the weekends) , and you’ll be surrounded by locals instead of tourists.

7. Explore Crete’s Mountains
Crete isn’t just beaches — it has a dramatic mountain landscape that becomes even more beautiful in winter.
You can:
Drive up to Psiloritis (Mount Ida) — often snowy in winter
Visit small mountain villages
Hike in cooler temperatures
Winter is ideal for nature lovers and hikers.

8. Why Crete Is Amazing for Winter Nomads
